Liao, I; Liu, F.
In order to develop effective formulated for Penaeus monodon , sufficient information is needed on its nutritional requirements. Unfortunately, research on this area has been very limited. This paper outlines the results of such research. Since data on the nutritional requirements of P. japonicus are relatively well established, some of these data are also reviewed in this paper and are used as a basis for assessing the nutritional requirements of P. monodon . Protein, lipid, carbohydrate, mineral and vitamin requirements are evaluated from the parameters of growth survival and feed efficiency. Studies on the effects of enzymes and the development of microparticulate diet for larvae are also summarized.

Nery, Marcela Carlota; Rocha, Adriana de Souza; Pinho, Édila Vilela de Resende Von; Santos, Heloisa Oliveira dos; Fialho, Cintia Maria Teixeira; Nery, Fernanda Carlota.
The seeds of a sesame crop contain approximately 50% oil content, one of the main reasons for their cultivation. However, information regarding methodologies for the assessment of quality seeds of this culture are scarce. Therefore, the objective of this study was to adapt the methods of accelerated ageing tests for sesame seeds and investigate changes in the behaviour of isoenzymes. The physiological characterization of the seeds and electrophoretic analysis of the isoenzymes superoxide dismutase, esterase, catalase, alcohol dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase and isocitrate lyase were also performed. For the accelerated ageing test, the seeds were subjected to the traditional method, with a saturated NaCl solution, at ageing times of 0, 24, 48, 72, and...

Activation of nitrate reductase of cashew leaf by exogenous nitrite Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Viégas,Ricardo Almeida; Silveira,Joaquim Albenísio Gomes.
Nitrate reductase (NR) plays a central role in plant primary metabolism and exhibits complex regulation mechanisms for its catalytic activity. There is controversy in the literature concerning the possible direct effect of NO2- on the stimulation and/or activation of NR activity. The influence of NO2- was studied on the NR activity in the leaves of 30-day-old cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) seedlings. Addition of NO2- to the reaction mixture containing leaf enzymatic extract resulted in a remarkable increase in NR activity. A trace amount (5 mumol.L-1) of NO2- was required to achieve full NR activity. The in vitro NR-activity showed a steady time-dependent increase when incubated in the presence of only NO3- + NO2-. In contrast, in vitro NR activity was...

Activity of cellulase from Thermoactinomycetes and Bacillus spp. isolated from Brassica waste compost Scientia Agricola
Chang,Chen-Chin; Ng,Chang-Chai; Wang,Chung-Yi; Shyu,Yuan-Tay.
Plant wastes present a high cellulose content, which is an ideal organic material for composting. Five strains of thermophiles from processed Brassica waste were isolated, and the hydrolytic activity on various cellulosic biomass substrata and their temperature profiles were determined. 16S rRNA sequencing identified these strains as Thermoactinomyces and Bacillus spp. Maximal cellulase activity corresponded to 2.3 U mL-1 of enzyme. The application of these strains on Brassica rapa residues demonstrates increased total nitrogen content). TA-3, a Thermoactinomycetes sp. strain, performs best among all inoculants, increasing the nitrogen content from 0.74 to 0.91%, and decreasing the carbon content from 15.4 to 12.2%, showing its high efficiency and...

Anatomy and physiology of digestive tract of crustaceans decapods reared in aquaculture ArchiMer
Ceccaldi, H.
The digestive tract of crustacea is complex. It is composed of a shor t oesophagum, a stomach with two bags, and internal wall with appendags specialized in grinding of feeds. These hard mastication pieces represent the gastric mill. Setae, filters included in the stomach structure allow the separation between food particles and liquid compounds. Those one are coming over through filters and more on to the digestive gland tubules or mid gut gland. In this organ, several types of cells play specialized functions: absorption, enzyme secretion, stocking function. Some cells of a new type, with undefined function, may be neurosecretions function, have been described recently. The end of tubules of digestive gland exhibits cells with embryonic characteristics....

Antioxidant system response induced by aluminum in two rice cultivars Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Ribeiro,Cleberson; Cambraia,José; Peixoto,Paulo Henrique Pereira; Fonseca Júnior,Élcio Meira da.
The antioxidant defense system response was evaluated in two rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L.), Fernandes (CNA-1158) and Maravilha (CNA-6843-1), treated with toxic levels of aluminum. After exposure to aluminum we determined plant growth, H2O2 and O2•- contents, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzymes activities and ascorbate and dehydroascorbate contents. Al predominantly accumulated in roots of both cultivars but it reduced root and shoot growth only in the Maravilha cultivar. Treatment with aluminum resulted in a reduction of 84 and 60% in the levels of H2O2 in the roots of the cultivars Maravilha and Fernandes, respectively, and of 26% in the levels of O2•- only in the roots of Fernandes cultivar. Increased lipid peroxidation was observed only in the...

Bacillus subtilis improves maize tolerance to salinity Ciência Rural
Ferreira,Nathalia Calhabeu; Mazzuchelli,Rita de Cassia Lima; Pacheco,Ana Claudia; Araujo,Fabio Fernando de; Antunes,Jadson Emanuel Lopes; Araujo,Ademir Sergio Ferreira de.
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the biochemical responses of maize, under saline stress, inoculated with Bacillus subtilis. Four levels of salinity were assessed: 0mM, 50mM, 100mM, and 200mM of sodium chloride (NaCl). Saline conditions influenced negatively maize growth. However, the inoculation of B. subtilis improved the plant growth at highest level of NaCl. Chlorophyll content decreased while proline increased in inoculated plants submitted to highest salt levels. Also, B. subtilis increased the relative water content in leaves. B. subtilis improves the plant growth under salinity and ameliorates the biochemical damages in maize.

Caractérisation morphologique et fonctionnelle des hémocytes chez l'huître plate, Ostrea edulis ArchiMer
Xue, Quiggang.
The mechanism that bivalve molluscs react to infectious agents are important research subjects in the fIeld of disease control studies for these animals. While the selection of disease resistant populations have made decisive progression in some species, the mechanism behinds these resistant phenomena is not yet clear so far. However, hemocytes must represent one of the key factors in the reaction process. Based on this hypothesis, the structure and function of European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, hemocytes have been investigated in aid of different techniques in the present study. ln addition, Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, hemocytes have been analysed in certain aspects so as to provide some results for comparison.
